30th anniversary

It’s hard to believe that we are old enough to have been married for 30 years, yet hear we are.

In the beginning, no one believed that we’d make it a year. Our premarital counselor honestly believed that the pain of our childhood would become the destruction of our marriage.

Hard times come to every couple. And we knew that we would experience our fair share of those hard times and we knew that they would be made even more difficult because of our childhood experiences and the generational curse of divorce that we were carrying into the marriage. But we also believed that God would carry us through those times.

And that’s what this post is about. It’s about God bringing us together and then keeping us together. When times got rough, we turned to God. When it seemed as if it would be easier to quit than to work through our issues, we reminded ourselves that our strength came from God alone.  When it seemed as if we couldn’t agree on anything, we chose to agree in our faith in God.

You might thing by reading this that our lives has been really hard but the truth is that it’s those hard times have always been preceded and followed by really good times. I think I’m trying to say that the hard times are just hiccups in a really good life.  And every hard time has served the purpose of bringing us closer to God and each other.

If I could encourage a young couple during one of the hard times of life, I would simply say that “this too shall pass.” And I’m talking about hard times and not deal breakers like infidelity, abuse, or addiction. The hard times of life have proven to be the sandpaper of our lives that smooth our rough edges and allow us to draw closer together.

As I sit here on my 30th anniversary, I can’t help but look forward to the next 30 years….. I always say that I haven’t ever been bored in my marriage and I’m not expecting things to get boring anytime soon. For us, marriage is not a journey. Nor is it a destination. It’s a grand adventure!!!!
